Nylon and polyester are the two most common synthetic stitching threads used across leather, footwear, bag manufacturing and technical textiles — but they are not interchangeable. Here's how they differ.
Elasticity
Nylon thread has more natural stretch, which makes it a good fit for stitching leather, footwear and products that flex regularly, since the seam can move with the material instead of cracking.
Strength and low shrinkage
Polyester thread has lower elongation and better dimensional stability, making it the preferred choice for bag closing, canvas, upholstery and outdoor applications where the seam needs to hold its shape under load.
UV and weather resistance
Polyester generally holds up better under prolonged sun exposure, so it's commonly used for outdoor products, tarpaulins and safety nets, while dyed nylon thread is favoured where colour vibrancy and flexibility matter more.
