How to Choose the Right Stitching Thread for Bag Closing Applications

Choosing the correct bag closing thread is not just about tying off a sack — it directly affects how well a bag survives handling, stacking, transport and storage. Get it wrong and you end up with torn seams, product spillage and returns.

Material matters

Cotton thread is soft and economical but loses strength when wet. Polyester and nylon threads resist moisture, abrasion and UV exposure far better, which is why most cement, food-grain, fertilizer and agricultural packaging today has moved to polyester stitching thread.

Denier and ply count

Thicker isn't always better. The right denier depends on the fabric weight of the bag and the stitching machine being used. Too thick a thread can damage woven polypropylene bags; too thin and the seam won't hold under load.

Tensile strength

For bags that will be stacked several feet high or dropped during loading, tensile strength and seam slippage resistance matter more than raw thickness. Always ask for test data before switching suppliers.
